Important Reminders

  • You will need to submit a bill of materials to Rush Chairs or CPW chairs prior to your event. This will need to include any parts from Digi-Key, the PCBs from Advanced Circuits, and any sketchy parts you get from Ebay, or ??
  • You will need to acquire soldering irons at least a week in advanced, or at least schedule borrowing them
  • Actually start early, because things can get rough in the last few days if you don't plan ahead.
  • Try to get some help even for the organizing stage. It will be more fun and easier for everyone.

Steps

Brainstorm ideas for a project that can be made for $10-$15 dollars. Some past ideas can be seen on the Soldering Seminar page.

Usually projects involve a micro-controller running some simple code that does something cool. PICs are cheap and have a lot of built in peripherals that make them good for these kinds of projects. Contact previous organizers to get help.

Design the circuit and test it on a breadboard.

Draw up the schematic in eagle. Design the PCB artwork (also in Eagle)

If you have lost of time, hand etch a board and test it.. (this is difficult for most two layer boards)

Order pats and PCBs

Test circuit on actual PCBs. Document any mistakes and determine workarounds necessary.

Document the building process. Take photos of the board during key steps. Include parts of the Helpful soldering tips by Isaac Gutekunst

Sort parts into nice bins or cups. Anticipate splitting each part into four cups.

Acquire lots of soldering irons, solder, sponges, extra wire etc.

Acquire help, so you can delegate responsibilities during the event
