The USB to DMX board is nothing more than a FTDI chip, some LEDs and MAX-485.

both transmit and receive capabilities
Software control of receive and send enable
Nicer board layout

Next Version

RTS, CTS, or some of those types of pins control the RX and TX enable, maybe even tx polarity

Advanced Version

Microcontroller with buffering, control of rx and tx polarity, rx and tx enable, maybe some flow control
