Projects
Cooking with high voltage
This is based on resistive heating of food when current passes through it. Since the resistance of most foods is large, high voltage is needed to get any appreciable power dissipation.
The aparatus is composed of a high voltage transformer removed from a broken microwave and two electrodes which are inserted into the food. The setup can deliver 1.8kW of power.
This technique was sucessfully used to win the "what a way to die" category in the 2005 EC Apple Bakeoff.
High current
A high current power supply consisting of three large transformers and rectifiers was built in spring 2005. It was originally intended to power a giant electromagnet found on reuse but the results were unsatisfactory. The power supply has since been used in many applications requiring low voltage and high current, such as arc welding, heating wires to break glass bottles, and electrolysis.
Unistrut loft
The loft was built over the summer of 2005, with discarded Unistrut. It is L-shaped, with a bed and built in desk on one side and an elevated storage platform with Institute furniture below it on the other.
Future plans include expansion to form a U. This new leg will support the Cat 5 hammock shown on the main page.
